The Embedded Form Factor

KONTRON INTRODUCES FIRST EMBEDDED ATX BOARD

Eching, Germany, July 16th, 2002 - Optimized for flat Pentium® 4 systems, Kontron is now introducing the main board EmbATX400 with the new form factor. This board forms the basis of new long-term availability systems, in particular in the range of high performance 19" rack systems. The Intel? Pentium? 4 processor operates currently with a clock frequency of up to 2.4 GHz and the system bus at 400 MHz or 533 MHz. Low power applications or applications with a required higher EMC rating are covered by the mobile variant of the processor.

As a chip set, the Intel 845E is used in combination with the South Bridge chip ICH4 which also supports USB 2.0. A maximum of 2 GB DDR-SDRAM is available as main memory.

The 64-bit graphics controller is connected via an AGP x 4 interface and has over 8 MB or 16 MB of integral memory available. It offers CRT panel resolutions of up to 1600 x 1200 pixels, it supports CGA, EGA, Hercules, MDA, VGA, SVGA, XGA and SXGA graphics modes and TTL, LVDS or PanelLink display interfaces. An adapter for (older) CRT systems is also available as an option.

The EmbATX400 board brings out four USB 2.0 interfaces at the back. Two further USB 2.0 plugs can be implemented through another connector located on the main board.

The first of the variants of the EmbeddedATX board which is immediately available from Kontron has a PCI slot in the range. Another variant with three PCI extension slots is planned for the end of Q3 2002. Kontron offers numerous options for PCI extension of the system: Everything is in the range, right from industrial I/O, RS232 and Ethernet cards through to fieldbus systems such as Profibus, CAN, DeviceNet, ControlNet and Interbus. Apart from classical embedded applications, the EmbeddedATX variant of the Pentium 4 board, together with frame-grabber cards, is also predestined for vision control tasks or, in conjunction with high definition sound cards, also for demanding multimedia applications.
The main board form factor, ATX, has already been established in the office sector for a long time. For three years now this form factor has been supplemented by microATX which now in turn receives reinforcement through the compatible form factor, EmbeddedATX. EmbeddedATX supplements microATX with specifications which give main boards an industry-compatible status.

The main board EmbATX 400 is available with immediate effect.
