KONTRON SELECTS BROADCOM® SILICON TO BUILD NEXT GENERATION AdvancedTCA BASE/FABRIC HUB BOARD WITH DUAL AdvancedMC SUPPORT

Product launch is part and parcel with the ´AMC Everywhere´ strategy behind Kontron Open Modular Communications solutions

CHICAGO, IL - June 7, 2005 - Kontron, a market leader in embedded computer technology, today revealed at Supercomm the Kontron AT8901 AdvancedTCA Hub Board, built with support for two AdvancedMC modules and switching silicon technology supplied by Broadcom Corporation, a global leader in wired and wireless broadband communications semiconductors. The new AdvancedTCA hub board will enable greater design flexibility to top tier tele/datacom Kontron clients with the optional support for switch fabrics such as Advanced Switching Interconnect.

Kontron AT8901 - switching power and versatility
The Kontron AT8901 may be used with both 14- and 16-slot (dual-star and full-mesh configurations; NEBS & ETSI) AdvancedTCA chassis, and is available in two flavors - Base Interface only (GbE) and Base and Fabric Interface (1 x GbE, 2 x GbE), with comprehensive Layer 2 & 3 protocol support. PICMG 3.0 and 3.1 compliant, the new hub board provides Gigabit Ethernet services on Base Channels 2-16 and to the Shelf Managers. The fabric interface switch provides 2X Gigabit Ethernet services to the second, redundant Hub Board and to payload slots 2-5 and 1X Gigabit Ethernet services to payload slots 6-15. The AT8901 is managed either in-band or out of band via 10/100 Ethernet or RS232 management ports.

As a second generation hub board, the Kontron AT8901 also offers a full range of design options with its support for two (2) AdvancedMC slots which can be used to: support a Processor-AdvancedMC module (acting as the system controller thereby saving one AdvancedTCA slot); an HDD-AdvancedMC module as a mass storage device; and a SETS-AdvancedMC (Synchronous Equipment Timing Source) module for network synchronization.

Broadcom switching silicon
The Kontron AT8901 is designed with leading-edge Broadcom® switching technology, featuring the StrataXGS III 500 Series and 300 Series of switches. These Broadcom components provide extremely high levels of integration, and flexible pin-compatible options such as a cost-effective Layer 2 + VLAN edition, a sophisticated Layer 3+ version, and a pin-compatible 10GbE uplink version with 0,2,3,4 10GbE ports. The StrataXGS III switch architecture also offers a robust API with an ecosystem of software providers, plus built-in support for IPv6 and sophisticated QoS.

Latest AdvancedMC modules
Kontron leads the industry with its ´AMC Everywhere´ architecture solution offerings which support the use of various AdvancedMC modules throughout an AdvancedTCA system (processor boards, carriers, and hub boards). This includes two new AdvancedMC modules also launched at Supercomm: the Kontron AM4300 AdvancedMC Quad Gbe module and the Kontron AM4500 SATA (storage) AdvancedMC module. These two modules join Kontron´s previously released AM4001 processor module, which is hot-swappable and features an Intel Pentium M processor up to 2.0 GHz, up to 4 GB DDR-II memory (PC400), and support for PCI Express.

Pre-integrated and application ready right out-of-the-box, Kontron open modular solutions are customizable and also feature best-in-class carrier-grade software such as MontaVistaâ Linuxâ Carrier Grade Edition (CGE), and hot-standby Solid CarrierGrade data manager from Solid Information Technology. This complements Kontrons existing offering of Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI v1.5) firmware, Hardware Platform Interface (HPI) support, and operating system and applications software.
