At the field, or edge level, data is collected by industrial computers, e.g. by gateways, which process, filter, analyze and act on these data in real-time right at the device.
Edge, fog and cloud applications demand increasing computing power. The interfaces to sensors or machines often require non-standard solutions. Especially in smaller machines, space is limited or restricted in some dimension and need a special solution.
Today, the connection from the sensor device to the embedded cloud takes place via real-time data communication, on sensor and edge level - for example Industrial Ethernet or fieldbuses - and gateways , which provide the transformation of real time data into the informational area.

Kontron Acquires Micro Automation Technology (M.A.T.) of Belgium
Eching, Germany, September 21, 2001 - Kontron Embedded Computers AG, a leading supplier of embedded computers today announced that it has acquired 100% of Micro AutomationTechnology (M.A.T.) in an all cash transaction valued at 1.26 million DM (approx $590,000 US).
Belgium-based M.A.T. had fiscal year 2000 revenues of 5 million DM (approx. $2.35 million US) with an EBIT of 8% of revenues. The company was founded in 1988 and specializes in supplying embedded computer solutions for rail vehicles and signaling applications, including advanced "tilt technology" for modern high-speed trains.
"The acquisition represents another step towards diversifying Kontrons market base within the embedded computer industry," stated Hannes Niederhauser, CEO of Kontron. "Our broad product portfolio is well developed for a wide range of markets and applications. The M.A.T. acquisition not only enhances Kontrons offering of complete embedded computer solutions in areas where we have been strong traditionally, but it also serves to position Kontron as a top supplier of embedded computer solutions in transportation, particularly for rail applications".
M.A.T. will be merged into the Belgium subsidiary of PEP Modular Computers GmbH, a Kontron company, forming a new company: Kontron Transportation.
