FieldWorks Awarded Contract from Telecommunications Giant Ericsson Corporation

Eden Prairie, Minn., July 16, 1997 - FieldWorks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FWRX), a leading maker of rugged mobile computers and electronic toolboxes for field applications, has won a contract to sell its expandable field workstations to Swedish telecommunications giant Ericsson Corporation. Ericsson will use the systems to install and field test its AXE digital telephone exchanges.

Specifically, Ericsson will use custom-engineered FieldWorks FW7600P systems to install and test digital cellular base-station PBX switches in Europe and also - under the terms of the new contract - the United States.

The new contract is an extension and expansion of an agreement reached in 1996. Under the contract, other divisions of Ericsson may now purchase FieldWorks systems for additional applications. The contract is valued at approximately $1.5 million (US) for the first year.

Ericsson had been searching for a way to eliminate the size, weight and high costs associated with using multiple large test instruments. By reducing these instruments to Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) and Peripheral Controller Interface (PCI) cards, which fit inside the FW7600P, Ericsson field engineers can now perform all test functions with one lightweight toolbox. Ericsson chose FieldWorks computers not only because of their ability to house ISA and PCI cards but also because they were upgradeable to future technologies, had sunlight-readable color displays and were ISO 9001 quality-certified.

"The Ericsson application is typical of what were experiencing in the exploding telecommunications equipment market," says Bob Szymborski, FieldWorks executive vice president. "We have many telecom customers. FieldWorks electronic toolboxes are becoming a critical requirement for telecom installers - they help installers do their jobs more efficiently and economically."

Ericsson is an international leader in telecommunications and the worlds leader in mobile telephone systems. Ericssons AXE exchange is the worlds most-sold digital telephone system and is used for wired and mobile communications networks.
