Kontron introduces 100G SYMKLOUD Platform for high volume NFV/SDN-based services at access, edge and core networks

New MS2920 is the ideal ‘short-depth’ converged infrastructure platform for security and vRAN use cases for multi-access mobile edge services

Montreal, Canada, November 7, 2017 – Kontron, a global provider of cloud and carrier-class integrated infrastructure platforms, today launched a new 100G SYMKLOUD platform with high density compute designed to support high volume virtualized services such as vRAN for mobile edge computing (MEC), network security, and vEPC and vIMS for LTE and future 5G services.

The new SYMKLOUD MS2920 converged infrastructure 100G platform complements the existing SYMKLOUD 1G, 10G, and 20G platforms, and in a 2U — 21-inch short depth enclosure combines both extreme compute density with up to 288 cores with the flexibility to support either legacy networking protocols or software defined networking (SDN) OpenFlow traffic.

As part of a bare metal switching strategy, the MS2920 features two fully managed 100GbE redundant switches that are modular and hot-swappable, and integrated ‘out-of-the-box’ with the Pica8 PICOS™ network operating system (NOS) for traditional networking or SDN deployments.

To take advantage of the new 100G switching capacity, the SYMKLOUD MS2920 supports the MSP8060, a new modular server node featuring two independent low-power 12C or 16C Intel Xeon D-1500 v5 Series processors, each with 128 GB DDR 4 memory and 512 GB M.2 storage. Each switch delivers to each node up to 40 GbE (4x10GbE) data plane traffic and 1GbE control plane traffic per processor.

As the MS2920 can be populated with up to nine MSP8060 nodes, the pooled compute resources adds up to an impressive 288 available physical cores to run any number of dedicated or ‘mix and match’ services run as virtualized network functions (VNFs) across a third-party- or SYMKLOUD-built NFV infrastructure.
