Kontron’s first COM Express® Type 7 Computer-on-Module delivers server-class performance in a small form factor

New Kontron COMe-bBD7 based on server-grade Intel® Xeon® D-1500 CPUs with up to 16 cores and two 10GbE interfaces

Augsburg, Germany, March 14, 2017 – Kontron, a leading global provider of Embedded Computing Technology (ECT), is introducing its latest COM Express® Type 7 Computer-on-Module (COM) at embedded world 2017. The new Kontron COMe-bBD7 is based on Intel® Xeon® D-1500 family CPUs and delivers powerful server-class performance in the COMe basic standard form factor (125 x 95mm). It is designed according to the new COM Express® Type 7 standard. In addition to the COMe-bBD7 Kontron also introduces a Type 7 Evaluation Carrier. The COMe-bBD7 module is equipped with Kontron’s standard hardware-based embedded Security Solution Kontron APPROTECT. Kontron is one of the first embedded computing suppliers to offer full security protection embedded in its products. Kontron’s Security Solution APPROTECT is based on an integrated security chip, which in tandem with a specifically developed software framework provides full IP, copy and reverse engineering protection. Additionally, Kontron’s APPROTECT Licensing enables new business models such as ‘pay per use’ or time based trial versions, as it can be used to easily enable or disable features via a predetermined set of variables.

The new COM Express Type 7 standard is a complementary specification to the existing Type 6 pin out. While the focus of Type 6 is on graphics-oriented applications supporting audio and video interfaces, the Type 7 pin out definition is for headless platforms without graphics support. Additionally, by introducing four 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) ports, an NC-SI (Network Controller Sideband Interface) and a maximum of 32 PCI Express (PCIe) lanes, the Type 7 is an ideal base for server-grade platforms and applications in need of high data and network throughput.

This latest COM Express module extends Kontron’s product family of server-class COM platforms. The new application-ready COMe-bBD7 module features data-centre-grade CPU performance with up to 16 cores. This robust performance is combined with support for two 10GbE-KR ports making it ideal for network intensive implementations. The KR design allows for maximum flexibility by defining the physical interface – KR for backplane connectivity, Copper (RJ45) or fibre (SFP+) on the base board. Furthermore the available NC-Si signals allow for the connection of a Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) on the baseboard for the purpose of enabling out-of-band remote manageability. This enhances reliability and helps reduce the overall operating cost in general.

In addition, the COMe-bBD7 offers high-speed connectivity from configurable PCIe lanes with an up to PCIe x24 implementation for high I/O performance demands such as those required in medical applications. Offering a well-balanced multi-core CPU versus memory-size approach, it supports up to 32 gigabytes (GB) of ECC and non-ECC DDR4 memory.

The Kontron COMe-bBD7 is also available in industrial-grade versions making it an excellent solution for applications that operate in harsh environments. The module supports Linux, Windows Server 2012 /2012 R2, 2016, Windows 7 and 10 and VxWorks.

“The new Kontron COMe-bBD7 modules are the ideal solution for compute-intensive and space-constrained applications that deliver critical high-performance network infrastructure with advanced features needed for today’s connected Internet of Things (IoT) requirements. The native Kontron security solution offers out of the box protection against increasingly complex threats,” said Peter Müller, Head of Portfolio Management Standard Products at Kontron. “Developers will also appreciate the broad range of available CPU options always offering the ideal solution for even the most specific operational requirements.”

Typical applications for Kontron's COMe-bBD7 are real-time Industry 4.0 fog servers, industrial or medical vision systems with 4K / Full HD camera signals, micro-servers, network appliances or network attached storage devices.

The Kontron COMe Eval Carrier T7 offers a complete set of standard interfaces, thus minimizing installation efforts for COMe-bBD7 modules. Kontron also offers a carrier reference design to customers - further reducing development costs, design time and ensuring a faster time-to-market for individual products.
