At the field, or edge level, data is collected by industrial computers, e.g. by gateways, which process, filter, analyze and act on these data in real-time right at the device.

Edge, fog and cloud applications demand increasing computing power. The interfaces to sensors or machines often require non-standard solutions. Especially in smaller machines, space is limited or restricted in some dimension and need a special solution.

Today, the connection from the sensor device to the embedded cloud takes place via real-time data communication, on sensor and edge level - for example Industrial Ethernet or fieldbuses - and gateways , which provide the transformation of real time data into the informational area.

6U COMPACTPCI BOARD WITH CURRENT-SAVING POWERPC

Kaufbeuren, Germany, June 26th, 2002 - PEP Modular Computers is now introducing the new high-end CPU CP620 which is particularly suitable for computation and/or memory-intensive applications in telecommunications or in industrial automation.

The feature which places the 6U CompactPCI board a cut above the rest: It is equipped with the extremely current-saving IBM 750CXE PowerPC processor. The processor´s very good ratio of computing power to current consumption makes the CP620 ideally suited to applications in embedded designs. Another feature in its favour is that the processor is also suitable for passive cooling through to the E2 extended temperature range (-40?C to +85?C). Applications with high shock and vibration stresses also benefit from the fact that the board is fitted as standard with a directly soldered SDRAM (scalable up to 1 Gbyte). The memory can be expanded both by SDRAM as well as by Flash (soldered, up to 4/8 MB) or CompactFlash.

The dual Fast Ethernet interface with 10 BT/100BTx autosensing can either be realised on the front panel ? as rear I/O interface ? or on the P3 CompactPCI plug. It is precisely in telecommunications systems that packet switched Ethernet via the CompactPCI backplane is under increasing demand and with the CP620 this is covered by the integration of the new PICMG 2.16 standard.

One feature not yet provided by currently available 4HP single-slot solutions is the combinational versatility of the interfaces on the CP620 (four configurable serial interfaces with rear I/O support). A characteristic that has been rare until now is the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) installed on the high-end CPU. This is in demand primarily with high availability "mission critical" systems.

In September last year PEP Modular Computers introduced with the CP620-PM the peripheral master for this computer architecture. With the CP620 the performance capability and versatility of the PowerPC processor is also available for single-processor systems from June 2002.
