Kontron previews its next-gen ATCA® processor blade at MWC09

TEMs and NEPs from around the world were invited during the Barcelona event to witness the future of ATCA® processor blades

Eching, Germany/Barcelona, Spain – February 17, 2009 – Kontron gave telecom and network equipment providers during day one of Mobile World Congress a first look of what the future holds in AdvancedTCA® processor blades. That future lies in the Kontron AT8050 node blade designed using the next-generation Intel® Xeon® processor. The Kontron AT8050 can be seen under an NDA at the Kontron Booth, 2.1, B14.

“The reaction from the TEMs and NEPs we met was immediate and extremely positive,” recounts Benoit Robert, executive director, product management at Kontron. “The introduction of such a processor blade during our current economic condition only substantiates the need for NEPs to seek out the best and most cost-effective alternatives to in-house system designs. Commercial-Off-The-Shelf vendors such as Kontron offer the best of both worlds, namely pre-integrated carrier grade open platforms that significantly help to: one, save on design costs and; two, deliver new network products to market sooner using leading-edge standardized telecom hardware and Intel® architecture processors.”

With its next-generation Intel® Xeon® processor and 10 GbE on the fabric interface, the Kontron AT8050 is expected to drive any number of mobile and multimedia server-storage applications that target IMS, NMS and the 3G Wireless control plane segments such as RNC and SGSN systems. Likewise, with the enormous scalability advantages of AdvancedTCA® – from 2U-2-slot to 13U-14-slot platforms – the Kontron AT8050 will have many cross-over deployment opportunities between the Central Office and Data Center environments.

Additional features of the Kontron AT8050 include up to 6 DIMM sockets and the design of one AdvancedMC™ bay to populate with an assortment of AdvancedMC™ modules. One example is the Kontron AM42xx series of intelligent packet processor AdvancedMC™ modules. These modules can
be leveraged for various wireless and wireline security packet inspection applications.

Also available is the RTM8050, a rear transition module built with a SAS controller to support a Hot Swappable SAS/SATA Hard Disk on the RTM and/or a SAS/SATA AdvancedMC™ module populated in the Kontron AT8050’s one AdvancedMC™ slot.
