Kontron nanoETXexpress-SP module delivers breakthrough performance for COTS software defined radio solution

Tests confirm Kontron’s Intel® Atom™-based module performance on jointly developed PrismTech and Wind River SDR military solution

Boston, MA, October 21, 2009 – Kontron today announced that the company’s Kontron nanoETXexpress-SP Computer-on-Module was tested in a software defined radio (SDR) solution and delivered breakthrough performance. According to performance testing conducted by PrismTech on its new SDR solution jointly developed with Wind River, Kontron’s Intel® Atom™-based Computer-on-Module has yielded exceptional results in a variety of performance benchmarks.

“The Kontron nanoETXexpress-SP was designed for next-generation, ultra-mobile applications. We are thrilled with the results of the integrated solution tests that confirm its excellent performance in a small form factor platform for military applications,” said Norbert Hauser, Vice President of Marketing for Kontron. “The Kontron nanoETXexpress-SP module, based on the Intel® Atom™ Z5XX processor series, delivers amazing energy-efficient performance in a 100 percent compatible COM Express™ pin-out Type 1 form factor.”

The significance of this benchmark study highlights the growing adoption of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) components that adhere to Software Communications Architecture (SCA) software radio standards allowing radio manufacturers to immediately meet stringent requirements of the military and commercial sectors. These standards, which can significantly reduce development costs and shorten time-to-market, are mandated by the U.S. Department of Defense for Joint Tactical Radio Systems (JTRS) and validated by the JTRS Test and Evaluation Laboratory (JTEL) enabling programmable radios to load waveforms, run applications, and be networked into an integrated system.

"The impressive results of our SDR solution integrated with the Kontron platform underscore the benefits that can be achieved using a COTS approach,” said Keith Steele, CEO, PrismTech. "We believe that the tests will also prove to demonstrate how our combined SDR solution with Wind River can enable a wide range of other SDR applications to be deployed.”

“Utilizing Wind River’s VxWorks 6 executed on a Kontron nanoETXexpress-SP module showcases the results combining both software and hardware COTS solutions to reduce development time in a standardized platform that helps speed time-to-market for developers,” said Rob Hoffman, general manager, Aerospace and Defense, Wind River. “We value Kontron as a committed Wind River partner that consistently delivers innovative, proven, leading-edge embedded computing products and platforms.”

PrismTech will be demonstrating its SDR/SCA application integrated with the Kontron nanoETXexpress-SP module in the Wind River booth #344 at MILCOM held in Boston, MA at the World Trade Center from October 18 to 21, 2009.
