Kontron nanoETXexpress COMs Set to Serve Mobile Applications

Compact Module Optimized for Specialized Needs of Small Embedded Solutions

BOSTON, September 19, 2007 – Building on the statement released by Kontron earlier this summer, the embedded computing technology innovation leader today announced further details regarding the forthcoming nanoETXexpress specification. Kontron nanoETXexpress modules will be designed to meet the low-power and size requirements for advanced and highly-mobile applications.

Targeted to deliver extremely power-efficient embedded solutions with mid to high performance x86 technology, the Kontron nanoETXexpress computer-on-module will occupy a footprint that is a mere 55 mm x 84 mm. This new nanoETXexpress form factor follows the COM Express standard as defined by the PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturer’s Group and will be 100 percent compliant with Type 1pin-out. Key features planned for inclusion in the nanoETXexpress specification include multiple PCI Express lanes and USB 2.0 ports, Serial ATA support, advanced graphics capabilities such as dual 24-bit LVDS channels, Gigabit Ethernet. It is also ideal for mobile, rugged applications as the specification includes onboard DRAM and Flash instead of SO-DIMM sockets for ruggedness, extreme low power Ethernet controller for overall lowest power consumption and a wide range power supply input of 4.75 to 14VDC. .

“The needs of very compact, portable applications are unique. Although some of the current embedded solution offerings come close, Kontron sees that a smaller module designed around newer architecture will be a better match,” stated Dirk Finstel, CTO of the Kontron Embedded Modules Division. “Kontron nanoETXexpress modules will be optimized for battery-powered applications that can go where ever the user needs to go in a very compact package.”

As previously stated, the goal of the nanoETXexpress specification initiated by Kontron is to build PCIe-based COMs on the smallest possible form factor. Many new applications that will benefit from the nano-size include hand-held units for medical, mobile data solutions and other emerging applications that have not been possible as of yet due to size restrictions.

The nanoETXexpress specification and related documentation will be available under a non-disclosure agreement in Q4 2007. Kontron anticipates launching its first Kontron nanoETXexpress module in Q2 2008.
