At the field, or edge level, data is collected by industrial computers, e.g. by gateways, which process, filter, analyze and act on these data in real-time right at the device.

Edge, fog and cloud applications demand increasing computing power. The interfaces to sensors or machines often require non-standard solutions. Especially in smaller machines, space is limited or restricted in some dimension and need a special solution.

Today, the connection from the sensor device to the embedded cloud takes place via real-time data communication, on sensor and edge level - for example Industrial Ethernet or fieldbuses - and gateways , which provide the transformation of real time data into the informational area.

Kontron books $24 million design win in new field of application

Major delivery order for American home entertainment provider opens up new sales opportunities

Eching, Munich, September 16, 2008. Kontron AG, one of the world's leading providers of embedded computer systems, has won a design order with a total volume of around $24 million in the important new B2B application field of home entertainment. Kontron has developed a motherboard for video and audio system based on the space-saving MicroATX-Format for one of the leading technology suppliers in North America. The intention is that the order will amount to an annual volume of $8 million, and will span several years. The first deliveries will start in the fourth quarter of 2008, and will continue until the full production target is reached from 2009. "This is the first design win in what is for us a new and exciting field of application, to which we ascribe great significance," commented Ulrich Gehrmann, CEO of Kontron AG. In this new infotainment segment Kontron expects from this new order a strong EBIT margin.

The compact Kontron 986LCD-M/FLEX motherboard supports the latest Intel® Core™ 2 Duo, Intel® Core™ Duo, Intel® Core™ Solo, and Celeron® processors. It is capable of a particularly high level of data throughput, and consumes very little energy. This creates ideal preconditions for broad use in various areas of application and markets. The new order means that Kontron is entering further up-and-coming market segments.
