High Performance Energy Saver

KAHLUA II POWERPC ON SINGLE-HEIGHT VME BOARD

Kaufbeuren, Germany, June 6th, 2002 - PEP Modular Computers is now launching the successor of the VMP1 CPU introduced in 1999. The new 3U VME processor card (single-board computer), VMP2, is equipped with the Motorola processor Kahlua II (MPC8245) and, compared to the previous version (with MPC8240), offers a few striking increases in performance.

The CPU clock frequency is increased from 250 MHz to 330 MHz,
The VMP2 can now be fitted with up to 256 MB SDRAM and 8MB flash memory (VMP1: 128 MB),
New in this computer class: The memory bus is clocked at its maximum clock frequency of 133 MHz (VMP1: 100 MHz).

Despite this increased performance, PEP has succeeded in reducing the power consumption of the single-board computer by 15 %.

The CPU, which is predestined for industrial applications with high demands on computing performance and/or memory capacity, has all the necessary communication interfaces: These include a Fast Ethernet interface with 10Bt/100Bt and autosensing as well as the two serial interfaces (1 x RS232 modem-compatible and 1 x RS232/485 which is also available optionally opto-decoupled).

A watchdog is available for system monitoring. Data retention, secure against power failure, can be realised utilising a DIL socket for DiskOnChip (file system without moving parts) or a NVSRAM.
The new VMP2 single-height VME processor card will be available from July 2002.
